Decided maybe I’d give Fallout 76 a try since it’s on XBox Game Pass PC and Kotaku was making the dubious claim that it no longer sucks: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
And so...

Note that you can’t actually do anything from this screen either (even exit) , dismissing the dialog just takes you back to the press any button screen, which brings back the dialog.
People seem to say that it’s due to installing on a drive other than C: (I’ve only got 45GB free there, so yeah no room for this), but that restarting might fix it. We’ll see. In any event, it’s good to see that Bethesda is keeping up its reputation for extremely high quality software.

Oh, so I won’t pick up a couple month subscription to game pass...thank you for saving me the trouble!

I do think Game Pass is a good deal. But yeah, apparently Bethesda couldn’t be bothered to test for a fairly common scenario. It is working now for what that’s worth...

I had game pass for a couple months but now that they raised the price to $10 I'm out. The only thing I was playing on it was flight sim so I just bought it on Steam.

It might be possible to circumvent that with symbolic links.
ps: also read that article the other day and was also thinking about giving it a try :)

Check your LIVE account settings. Should be under family settings.

You definitely have to install it on the C drive, unfortunately. Not sure if it's a Bethesda or Microsoft store issue, but you can't circumvent it. I play the game regularly and enjoy it.

Hey I worked there once.

It’s working for me on my F:\ drive now.

76 is a game people love to hate but I have ~500 levels spread out between my 3 characters and I love it. The community is really friendly and diverse.

Yeah I guess for “free” I’ll give it a shot. I’ve spent 100s of hours in New Vegas , and 4(the settlement builder is a real time suck) and I’m not even that into video games. But I kinda hate online games so 76 never really appealed to me.

Was it still good when you worked there?

Yeah, I wish there was a “don’t even see other players” or a mode where they can’t hurt you and you can’t hurt them (there was a peaceful mode at launch, but all someone had to do was walk in front of your fire so that you shot them first, and then they could shoot you with full effect. Looks like this work a little differently now so I’ll have to see how that is).

Not sure about the C drive thing, I think it's kind of an urban myth... It's been running on my J drive since release, which isn't just a separate partition, it's a completely different hard drive. YMMV

I had the same issue but I went into the Xbox account settings and changed that setting that says there and it fixed. Still, played for 1 hour and didn't see what is so interesting about 76. I prefer Fallout 4 even though the settlement building on pc sucks.

Not true in the slightest . I have it installed on an external ssd drive no problem with everything else. Before I got that I had it on my D drive no problem.

If you toggle on pacifism you can’t hurt anyone and visa versa even intentionally shooting at them. Just be warned environmental damage triggered by a player can still kill you so watch out next to explosive items like cars as a troll can shoot it to kill you. Also if you take a workshops you are auto flagged for PvP as long as you control it. If you don’t want to see other players period you have to pay for Fallout 1st.

I worked there back in 2012. I worked on Dishonored, Doom 3 BFG, and all the Skyrim DLC.

I hate online games. The idea of playing with absolute strangers and greifers i s awful to me . I think years of hearing my kids raise hell with people in Black Ops and Fortnite instilled that fear. FO76 has been a pleasant experience. Nothing like what I expected.... but I'm not about to start checking out other online games.
“Pacifist mode” in the settings works that way. If you hit another player in pacifist mode , you don’t inflict any damage (they don’t even know you hit them) , if a player hits you while you’re in pacifist mode, it doesn’t really have any effect on your HP. My player lives in pacifist mode. I’ve been playing since BETA, and I’ve only had a few people try to PVP with me. It’s pretty rare. P acifist mode is especially handy in events, because I’m constantly hitting the other players (by accident). My ONLY complaint is that pacifist mode doesn’t extend to non-hostile NPCs.

You can 100% install it on other drives with gamepass. You just have to move the ini files into your My Games/Fallout 76 folder where they belong. And it’s a Microsoft issue.

There's a pacifist mode that turns off PvP. Nobody does PvP, anyway. There's really no reward or benefit to it.

You can do the Live Gold to Game Pass backdoor and effectively get 3 years of Game Pass for about $120 by buying on cdkeys. It's the main reason I'm going with Xbox this generation.

I pop in on 76 every so often. It improved a lot after the move to Steam (less random disconnects and crashes but they still exist). The elephant in the room is the truly old game engine that was never meant for online use.
That being said I have enjoyed a decent amount of playtime in the game and it has improved a lot since launch, though that mostly should be seen as a sign of how bad it was at launch.

Thanks for the Skyrim DLC.
I’m at the point in my life where the only video game I think I’ll ever play is whatever Elder Scrolls game comes out, any Fallout single player games, and a Star Wars single player RPG if they ever make one again.

I didn’t do nothing too important to be thanked lol did some QA work for a few months , got my name in the credits roll.
I try to never have regrets, but my luck is I worked for the maker of my favorite single player series........at a time when they didnt make a game for that series (Fallout)

So I love this game. Everything I ever wanted bugs and downfalls or not. I was a huge New Vegas nerd in High school. However, if you arnt into "video games" is suggest not trying. It's a time suck game. It's difficult and it's a bit bulky yet. It is true it has made great advances but it's still a massive game with a whole lot of iasues. However, I alwwys like seeing people trying. I try to be helpful. I have rocked the same took since it came out. I just hit lvl 104. Not to high lvl I know lol. I wish I had a whole lot more time. Once again, up to you, but try to give it some time if you try. Nothing is ever truly free ;)
